‘Dubai’ is closer than you think

There’s a new sign on an old fishing pier in Redington Shores.

The former Redington Long Pier is now known as the Dubai Long Pier, a result of a spat between the pier’s owners and Redington Shores city officials.

“The city doesn’t deserve to have the name after what it’s put us through,” said Tony Antonious, co-owner of the pier.

Antonious was embroiled in a legal dispute over repairs to the pier ordered by the city after Tropical Storm Alberto washed away portions of the pilings. An engineer commissioned by the city to inspect the damage deemed the pier unsafe and the city closed it down until the repairs were made.

It was closed entirely for two weeks and then, as the deficiencies were corrected, portions of the pier were reopened, said Mayor Jody Armstrong.

“There were hot electrical wires exposed, rotted boards on the pier and raw sewage leaking into the water from the restrooms,” Armstrong said. “We shut it down for safety.”

It took nearly two years and a lawsuit before everything was fixed, she said.

Antonious claims he’s out $500,000 in legal costs and repairs ordered by the city.

When Antonious asked the city to help with the costs, the city said no thanks. That’s when he changed the name on the 44-year-old, 1,000-foot pier, removing the geographical reference to Redington Shores.

“We have no control over what he calls his pier, only that he pays his occupational license,” Armstrong said.
