Tangerine Plaza developer given another year to secure funding, grocer

The city of St. Petersburg has granted the developers of a long-vacant shopping plaza in South St. Petersburg more time to bring a grocer and affordable housing to the property.

City council voted 6-2 Thursday to approve a one-year extension for Sugar Hill Group, which submitted its unsolicited offer for the redevelopment of Tangerine Plaza in May 2022. The developer was selected in June 2024 and was given 18 months to secure funding to build affordable housing and find a grocer, but the group had failed to fulfill either request. Sugar Hill now has another year to move forward on its plans and told council it received a letter of intent from grocer Taste of the Islands on Wednesday.
