New parking garage doubles public spaces in St. Pete's Edge district

Business owners in St. Petersburg's Edge district have been pleading for more parking for over a decade — and on Tuesday, their wish was granted.

A 531-space parking garage opened Tuesday morning in The Central, the 2.1-acre property on Central Avenue that was previously the St. Petersburg Police Department headquarters. When the redevelopment is complete, it will be home to a 10-story, 130,000-square-foot office tower called the Halcyon, a 15-story Autograph Collection Hotel, 15,900 square feet of retail and 42 units of affordable housing.
