Water Street developer confirms deals with Synovus

The developer of Water Street Tampa has confirmed Synovus will lease office space in the district — and also says the bank will open a retail branch there as well.

Strategic Property Partners, controlled by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, said Thursday that Synovus will lease 14,234 square feet on the seventh floor of tower Thousand & One. A retail branch — if federal regulators sign off — will open on the street level of apartment tower Asher.

City building records showed construction plans for a 10,829-square-foot office on the seventh floor.

"Synovus is thrilled to be part of the development and innovation taking place in the city of Tampa, and our new Water Street location represents our commitment to the financial and economic health of this key growth market,” said Sean Simpson, Synovus division CEO for Central and South Florida.

A spokeswoman for Synovus did not immediately respond to questions on Thursday on how many employees would work from the Water Street office and whether those employees would be moved from an existing Synovus office.

“Water Street Tampa is becoming the ultimate destination for businesses to grow and thrive,” David Bevirt, executive vice president of corporate leasing and strategy for SPP, said in a statement.
