DHL Express opens first warehouse in Pinellas County

DHL Express has opened a new warehouse near the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

The $4 million investment in Largo at 12310 62nd St. N includes 30,400 square feet of warehousing and office space and approximately 40 loading docks.

The facility will split the shipping volume for the Tampa Bay area by working alongside DHL’s existing facility in Tampa, which will lead to deliveries leaving approximately 30 minutes faster. The company said it will also result in later pickup cutoff times for local customers.

Currently, DHL Express’ only other facility in Tampa Bay is in Tampa at 4539 Oak Fair Blvd.

“The company’s expansion in St. Petersburg was an ideal location, strategically located near an airport which provides us the flexibility we need as we grow our air network,” Richard Saavedra, vice president and general manager for DHL Express in the Southeast U.S., said in a release. “International shipment growth in this market has been around 18% over the last three years, so this investment ensures we can continue to grow with our customers while providing the highest level of service.”

According to the company, business-to-consumer and business-to-business e-commerce shipment volumes are facing “unprecedented growth” along the west coast of Florida, including Pinellas County. The new DHL facility will be able to process 3,000 pieces per hour and is supported by 30 couriers and operational personnel.

Soon electric pickup and delivery vehicles will be introduced at the site, which DHL says will support its “sustainability roadmap that targets 60% of its global delivery fleet to be electrically powered by 2030.”

The DHL Express facility will handle U.S. domestic and time-definite international shipments in 220 countries and territories. The site will also have a ServicePoint for customers to drop off and pick up shipments.
