WESLEY CHAPEL - It took more than two years, but the developers of a new shopping center in Wesley Chapel are now gearing up to open.

The Shoppes of Wesley Chapel, on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard a half-mile north of State Road 56, is scheduled to open in the summer.

"The buildings should be completed near the end of April," said Jon Wittner, a principal of Strategic Development LLC. "We hope to be able to turn it over a few months after that."

The 42,000-square-foot center sits in front of the Seven Oaks development.

The Bank of St. Petersburg will have a 6,500-square-foot branch there.

Other tenants include Quiznos sub and sandwich store; Prestige Bridal salon; Party Fever, a party supply store; and Exit Extreme Realty.

Additional tenants are expected to be announced soon.

"We have about 10,000 square feet left," Wittner said.

But Wittner said the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel lost two tenants that were earlier in negotiations: Bennigan's Grill & Tavern and an unnamed Japanese steak house and sushi bar.

Positioned in a neighborhood thriving with commercial development, the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel join other strip centers with restaurants like Bonefish Grill and First Watch a half-mile south, and three huge malls: the Shops at Wiregrass, Cypress Creek Town Center and the Grove at Wesley Chapel.

Farther west on State Road 54, Strategic Developments is working on another shopping center.

Camp Indianhead Crossings is a 19,000-square-foot proposal just west of the Collier Commons retail development.

"That's supposed to start construction early summer, and have it turned over to the tenants later in the year," Wittner said.

Like the Shoppes of Wesley Chapel, Camp Indianhead Crossings will feature mostly retail stores, but with at least one medium-sized restaurant, Wittner said. He said it was too early to disclose tenant names.
