City Hopes Tenants Claim Baggage Building

The city hopes you'll consider the baggage building at Tampa Union Station.

"Union Station is so underutilized," said Cyndy Miller, the city's director of growth management and development services. "We do hope we can get some tenants in there."

Union Station, at 601 N. Nebraska Ave., was donated to the city by CSX. It is a historic building, holding a designation as a local landmark and a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1912 and was closed in 1982 because of structural deterioration.

The city acquired the building in the late 1990s.

The main building is leased by Amtrak, but the baggage building has been vacant since the city owned it, said Herb Fecker, real estate manager. Nothing is in it now, and there is no water or sewer service.

Miller said the city tried to lease it a couple of years ago, but the people who were interested backed out at the last minute. Now the city is trying again, and plans to issue a request for proposals within the next month.

No price has been set yet for the 5,000-square-foot space, but the city is hoping to make money off the deal.

"We're trying to create it into an income-producing entity," Fecker said.

Building improvements would have to be made by the future tenants, Miller said.

"It's not in move-in condition," she said.
