Church of Scientology plans October opening for Flag Building

The Church of Scientology plans to open its Flag Building in Clearwater on Oct. 6, in the culmination of a 15-year construction process.

The dedication ceremony is expected to attract 10,000 Scientologists and the following month the building will host the International Association of Scientologists' Anniversary Weekend, which is expected to attract 8,000 people.

The annual anniversary weekend held by the IAS has typically been held in England and is used by church leader David Miscavige to enumerate the church's success over the past year and to announce new projects, the Tampa Bay Times said. The Flag Building is also called the "Super Power" building, the Times said. It will be the location of the Super Power program devised in the 1970s by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. In this program, according to Hubbard's teachings, participants would seek spiritual advancement by being spun on a wheel. They would also "spend time in a sound chamber, sniff vials emitting fragrances and experience changes in gravitational pull,” the Times reported

According to a 2011 report by the Times, the church raised $145 million to build the seven-story building.
