City approves 20-year lease on Water Works Building for Gonzmart
By Staff Report
Tampa Bay Business Journal
Published: May 17, 2013

Richard Gonzmart, the owner of the Columbia Restaurant, has been granted a 20-year lease to the Water Works Building, where he plans to open his Native American-inspired restaurant, Ulele.

City officials chose Gonzmart to renovate the space more than a year ago, but the official lease agreement was caught up in bureaucracy. Gonzmart will be granted a $1 per year lease on the building for 20 years with the option of renewing the lease for two more 20-year terms, the Tampa Bay Times said.

The cost of renovating the building, which dates back to 1903, and transforming it into a 6,800-square-foot restaurant and later a microbrewery is more than $4 million. The building that sits on the east side of the Hillsborough River in Tampa Heights is sentimental to Gonzmart since it supplied water to his family's restaurant when his great-grandfather opened the Columbia in 1905.
