New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has officially made Tampa his home.

Someone representing Jeter filed on Feb. 19 for a homestead exemption on his $13 million Davis Islands mansion, according to the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser's Office.

The New York Daily News reported in October that Jeter had sold his penthouse apartment in Manhattan's Trump World Tower for $15.5 million with plans to make Tampa his permanent residence.

Jeter spent two years building his house on Bahama Circle. It has nine bathrooms, seven bedrooms, four fireplaces and two elevators.

At a total of 32,700 square feet, it is the largest single-family home in Hillsborough County and is worth nearly twice as much as the county's second-most valuable home.

Because Jeter finished his home in 2011, he paid $68,673.69 in taxes that year – the value of the unfinished property. When the house entered the tax rolls Jan. 1, 2012, Jeter's tax bill jumped to $265,554.77.

A homestead exemption will lower the home's appraised value by $50,000. But perhaps more importantly, the state's Save Our Homes law will cap Jeter's future property taxes based on inflation or 3 percent, whichever is lower.

This year, Save Our Homes allows taxes on homesteaded property to rise 1.7 percent, according to the appraiser's office.

The switch also means Jeter will pay no Florida state income tax on his $17 million Yankees salary this year. New York will tax him as a nonresident, which will exempt any investments or capital gains from taxation, said Geoff Gloak, spokesman for the New York State Tax Department.
