Tie vote in Treasure Island to get recount Friday

Pinellas County election officials have scheduled a recount for a Treasure Island referendum question that ended in a tie Tuesday night.

When the unofficial results were in, 762 voters each had cast ballots on either side of a proposal to allow Treasure Island to increase density up to 60 hotel or motel rooms per acre in the core district of the downtown redevelopment district.

That triggered a state law that mandates an automatic machine recount if the margin between candidates or issues in unofficial results is ½ percent or less. A manual recount would be required if the machine recount results in a margin of ¼ percent or less, said Nancy Whitlock, communications director for the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections.

The recount is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at the Supervisor of Elections Office, 13001 Starkey Road near Largo. The Pinellas County Canvassing Board will also meet then to certify results of Tuesday's election.

Voters in eight cities went to the polls to elect a variety of mayors, council members and to decide on development issues.

Both meetings Friday are open to the public.
