St. Petersburg pays top dollar for site near police station

The city of St. Petersburg will purchase property to build a new police station at nearly twice the land's value.

The four parcels of land are near the police headquarters. An appraiser found the property is worth $351,000, but the owner demanded $1.6 million. Eventually the two sides agreed on the price of $600,000, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

But three council members voted against the purchase saying the price was unreasonable, the Times noted. Construction on the police station – which will cost about $40 million total – will begin in 16 months.

The property is owned by Pamela Carr, who is the widow of the late Pinellas County JudgeRichard Carr who dies last year, according to the Times.
