South Tampa Borders will become medical institute

At least one former Borders location will soon have a new purpose in life.

The Florida Orthopaedic Institute will relocate from a site on Lois Avenue into a now-vacant Borders bookstore in South Tampa, according to representatives for Colliers International, which helped broker the deal.

Florida Orthopaedic Institute specializes in less invasive medical treatments for bone and joint problems, and it has 12 locations in the Bay area, including a 10,000-square-foot headquarters on Telecom Parkway in Temple Terrace.

Borders closed a half-dozen Bay-area locations after filing for bankruptcy protection in February. The location at 909 N. Dale Mabry Highway near Kennedy Boulevard was considered a prize spot with ample parking and exposure to high-traffic streets.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 40-year-old chain tried to stay in business in scaled-back form after announcing it would shed most of its 399 stores and 10,700 employees. But creditors and lenders said the company would be worth more if it liquidated.

In addition to the Tampa store, there are former Borders properties at 12500 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood, 2020 Town Center Blvd. in Brandon, 2683 Gulf to Bay Blvd. in Clearwater, Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg, and 3800 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. No other transactions had been completed for other area sites, said Jim Avallone, a senior managing director with DJM Realty, which Borders hired to help dispose of retail sites
