RETURN TO NEWS INDEX Trader Joe's opening first Florida store in Naples Naples will be the first Florida city to get a Trader Joe's, with a 14,000-square-foot location opening this year at 10600 Tamiami Trail N., according to spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki. Trader Joe's stores tend to be much smaller than typical grocery stores – roughly the size of a Fresh Market location – and each store introduces about a dozen new items each week, in keeping with its slogan of "adventurous appeal." Many items lean toward the organic or culinary flair, such as a pack of dried green mango slices for $2.49, "Seville Orange Marmalade," for $3.49, or a 16-ounce package of the company's own pulled pork for $4.99. Trader Joe's typically sticks with stable prices, rather than periodic sales, and the company states, "there are no fancy promotions, discount cards or couponing wars." For fans of Trader Joe's signature "Two Buck Chuck" wine, this Naples location will sell the economically priced Charles Shaw wine, Mochizuki said. Founded in the Los Angeles area in 1958, Trader Joe's has expanded to more than 350 stores in 30 states. Officially, Trader Joe's executives won't say if they plan a location for Tampa, though real estate experts in Tampa Bay area have been abuzz that mysterious grocery executives have been touring the area. Also, the Trader Joe's opening in Naples bodes well for this area because grocers tend to open an entire region around a central distribution hub. The next closest Trader Joe's is in the Atlanta area, so the Naples location likely indicates more Florida sites are in the works. |
