RETURN TO NEWS INDEX PwC prepares for new Tampa offices, taps government millions is in line to receive about $2 million in subsidies from the city of Tampa, Hillsborough County and the state of Florida in exchange for adding 200 local jobs. The accounting and professional services firm's identity was not publically disclosed as government officials approved the incentives earlier this month under the guise that failure to do so would result in the unnamed company relocating elsewhere. Local governments nearly always provide a cloak of confidentiality while negotiating taxpayer-funded incentives for private companies seeking to re-locate or expand their operations. On Monday, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reported that PwC signed a long-term lease with MetLife for a build-to-suit building at MetWest International in Tampa. The 10-story building will cost roughly $78 million, New York-based PwC spokesman Steve Silber said. He would not disclose whether the project is being financed or paid from the company's own capital funds. Silber said he "didn't have knowledge†of company plans to leave Tampa if it didn't get the incentives. Company officials quoted in other news media have said there were no plans to leave but that the new jobs could have been created in other locations. "Any incentives we may receive are contingent on the fulfillment by us of adding and retaining jobs and building the building,†said Silber said. A year ago PwC cut about 500 technology jobs in Tampa. Many of those employees were moved to other positions and the company added nearly 300 jobs in other sectors, Silber said. He said there was a net increase in employment, but he couldn't say how much. |
