City buys more land along 22nd Street

EAST TAMPA - City Council members last week agreed to pay $80,000 for a house on 22nd Street, adding one more parcel to a growing list of properties slated for redevelopment.

The property, at 2924 N. 22nd St., is south of the former Gene's Bar, an infamous drinking establishment that the city bought and tore down in 2007.

In recent years the city has paid more than $1.3 million to acquire property along 22nd Street, near Belmont Heights Estates. This latest acquisition is not part of a specific redevelopment proposal.

City officials, however, are reviewing proposals that could lead to development of affordable apartments for low-and-middle-income tenants on previously purchased land north of Gene's Bar. The project would benefit from $10 million in federal stimulus money allocated last year along with $28 million to the Encore project, which is under construction at Nebraska Avenue and Cass Street.

Encore will replace Central Park Village, an aging public housing complex torn down several years ago.

The money for the land purchases has come from a portion of property taxes collected within the East Tampa special tax district. The district is a 7-square mile area bordered by Hillsborough Avenue, interstates 275 and 4, and the city limits.
