The company that owns Omni Hotels had the winning bid Monday for Amelia Island Plantation, the Florida resort north of Jacksonville that filed for bankruptcy protection in November.

TRT Holdings/Omni Hotels bid $67.7 million for the beach-front resort. The offer is subject to approval at an Aug. 26 hearing.

Starwood Capital and Noble Investment Group were the unsuccessful bidders. TRT's winning bid was $20 million more than the original offering submitted earlier this year.

Amelia Island Plantation is a 1,350-acre beach-front property with a landmark 54-hole golf course. The resort fell into trouble because of the economy and difficulties with financing.

Texas-based TRT Holdings is operated by Robert Rowling who is listed at No. 189 on Forbes list of worldwide billionaires. His fortune is estimated by the magazine to be worth $4.4 billion.
