RETURN TO NEWS INDEX Tampa layoffs coming for Wells Fargo, Bank of America TAMPA - Wells Fargo announced today it will close its Wells Fargo Financial division, shuttering seven stores in Tampa Bay, 34 in Florida and 638 nationwide. The move will mean the loss of 2,800 jobs in the next 60 days. One thousand more positions will likely be eliminated during the next 12 months, Wells Fargo said. No breakdown by location was provided in a news release on the company's website. The bank said it will find jobs elsewhere for most of the financial division's 14,000 employees. The layoffs come on the heels of a notice filed with the state Friday that Bank of America will eliminate 50 jobs at a financial and insurance service center north of Tampa International Airport. Work done at the center, 5301 W. Idlewild Ave., includes reception and processing of bank deposits by mail from 39 states and from military posts. In a notice to the state Agency for Workforce Innovation, Florida's employment service, the bank said the layoffs will come by the end of August. Bank of America could not be reached for comment today. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo said in its news release that the financial division became redundant because of the bank's 2008 merger with Wachovia. Customers now have access to 6,600 Wells Fargo and Wachovia community bank stores and 2,200 Wells Fargo Home Mortgage locations, Wells Fargo said. Less than 2 percent of Wells Fargo's real estate loans originated in Wells Fargo Financial stores in the first quarter of 2010. Business conducted at the stores included homes loans, auto loans, credit cards, insurance, and commercial. David Kvamme, president of Wells Fargo Financial, said, "The economics of a separate Wells Fargo Financial channel are no longer viable, especially now that our customers have access to the largest banking and mortgage store network in the United States." The closings will leave vacancies in hundreds of strip shopping centers across the country. Here, according to the bank's website, are Wells Fargo Financial stores in Tampa Bay: • 15227 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa • 13446 Boyette Road, Riverview • 11222 Park Blvd., Seminole • 35111 U.S. HWY 19 N., 203, Palm Harbor • 3670 Harden Blvd., Lakeland • 101 Riverfront Blvd., 620 Bradenton • 13128 Cortez Blvd., Unit 18, Spring Hill |
