January hotel stays up statewide, down locally
Tampa Tribune
Published: Mar 12, 2010

TAMPA - Florida's hotel business rebounded in January in all but the Tampa-St. Petersburg region, where occupancy and revenue performance suffered from comparisons with the Super Bowl draw a year ago and cold weather that's affected leisure properties in Pinellas County.

Rooms sold statewide in January increased 7.2 percent from a year ago, compared with a 2.6 percent increase nationwide, the most recent Smith Travel Research report showed.

But rooms sold in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area declined 1.9 percent and revenue declined 26.8 percent.

Data from Tennessee-based Smith Travel, which provides research to Hillsborough County, did not reveal detailed revenue or rooms sold figures beyond the percentage changes for the region.

Eleven other Florida regions that Smith Travel tracks showed gains of rooms sold in January, led by a 16.8 percent increase in Miami, which hosted this year's Super Bowl, and a 14.2 percent gain in nearby Fort Lauderdale.
