RETURN TO NEWS INDEX New Group To Develop Trump Site A Miami-based company is poised to take the reins in developing Trump Tower Tampa. The Related Group signed a letter of intent late last week to become general managing partner of the long-delayed luxury condominium project, according to Jeneissy Azcuy, Related's head communications director. Azcuy said she couldn't predict when the deal might close. She also said she couldn't discuss financial terms, construction timetables, or how much of a role the original developer, Tampa-based SimDag LLC, and its new partner, Orlando-based Mirabilis LLC, would play in the project. The letter of intent is "as much as, right now, I can tell you," she said. If the deal goes through, people can expect Related to act quickly, Azcuy said. Waiting around is "not Related's style," she said. SimDag spokesman David Hooks said he couldn't comment on Related's claims. Trump Tower Tampa was announced with great fanfare more than two years ago, but SimDag has been set back by rising construction prices, extensive site work and problems in securing financing. The project now faces $3.3 million in construction liens. Related is no stranger to condominiums bearing the Trump name. It has built three Trump-branded condominium towers at Sunny Isles Beach near Miami, and has plans for two more in Hollywood and Palm Beach. Donald J. Trump, the celebrity real estate developer, told The Tampa Tribune this month he was frustrated with the lack of progress on Trump Tower Tampa. He also said he supported Related's efforts to buy the development rights for the condominium project. Reporter Dave Simanoff can be reached at (813) 259-7762 or dsimanoff@tampatrib.com. |
