Distressed properties in the Tampa Bay area pile up faster than bankers and the government can throw them a lifeline.

First American CoreLogic reports that nearly 14 percent of Tampa Bay mortgages were in 90 or more days late in August. More than 8.5 percent of Tampa Bay mortgages were in some stage of foreclosure.

That's nearly double the percentage of mortgage defaults from a year earlier. The number of delinquent mortgages also rose from July to August. First American's July report showed 13.5 percent of mortgages were 90 or more days late and 8.3 percent were in foreclosure.
