The biggest business districts in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties have some of the largest vacancy rates.

In Hillsborough's West Shore district, far and away the biggest office aggregation near Tampa, office vacancy was 20.6 percent in the quarter ending Sept. 30. Pinellas' Gateway district is suffering a vacancy rate of 26.9 percent. In the third quarter - July 1 to Sept. 30 - 406,000 square feet of net office space was vacated in West Shore and Gateway.

The statistics come courtesy of the Cushman & Wakefield real estate firm. Both job centers were world beaters just two years ago. But they've taken the worst of the banking and real estate implosion.
