Carrollwood residents weigh in about development plan

CARROLLWOOD - More than 50 residents of this northwest Hillsborough enclave came out to the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library to see plans and share ideas of how they envision their community.

During the open house Tuesday night, a line of residents snaked through the meeting room, each taking turns looking at colorful maps and other ideas displayed on easels. The meeting, hosted by the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission, was one of the last chances residents had to give input on the guidelines for future development in Carrollwood and surrounding areas.

Three tables in the middle of the room made up the writing area where people also filled out orange worksheets and stuffed them into a comment box.

Fred Wright and his wife, Karen, have come to several meetings about the plan over the past year.

"We find it a little bit challenging because we don't have a clean slate to work from," said Wright, a 30-year resident of Carrollwood. "We are hoping we can get more greenways put in."

So far, the plan calls for more density and mixed-use development and using "green" building standards. Residents have said they also would like to see movie theaters, more hotels and pedestrian-friendly town centers. Plans also would include future rail use along Dale Mabry Highway.

During the next meeting Aug. 18, comments from Tuesday's open house will be reviewed and the community plan fine-tuned, before going to the County Commission for final approval.

Planning started more than a year ago for the area bounded by the Veterans Expressway on the west to Interstate 275 on the east, and from Linebaugh Avenue north to Van Dyke Road.

Residents can vote on the plan's official name. Currently, it is called the Greater "Carrollwood" Area Communities Plan, but residents could offer their own suggestions or vote on these three: Central Northwest Hillsborough Communities Plan, North Dale Mabry Community Plan or Greater Carrollwood/Northdale Communities Plan.

Wright suggested another: Northwest Central Greater Carrollwood Area. He said he wanted a name that minimized the Carrollwood brand.

"There is so much to represent," Wright said.

What's next?

The plan will be reviewed at a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Carrollwood Recreation Center, 3515 McFarland Road.
